Getting Started - How to Get on the Road

First you need to pass a Theory Test, then obtain a Learner Permit.  If you are obtaining your first Learner Permit, Code 991, after 4th April 2011, you must take 12 compulsory one hour driving lessons (EDT).

Theory Test:

To apply, either call 1890 606 106 or click on www.dtts.ie to apply online.

Learner Permit:

  • Application Forms available from Local Motor Tax Office or Garda Station.
  • 2 Passport Photographs signed.
  • Theory Test Pass Certificate
  • Eyesight Report
  • Fee €15.00
  • Evidence of Identity, e.g. Passport

Please note that while you have to take 12 compulsory lessons, you still have to hold your first Learner Permit for at least six months before you are allowed to sit your Driving Test.

Driving Test:

You can apply on line at www.drivingtest.ie.
(You will need to have a credit card or debit (laser) card on hand to pay the fee)
